Rules in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, a bicycle caravan is categorized as 'bicycle accessories' or a trailer.

  • Max. width: 1.00 meter
  • Max. height: 2.50 meters
  • Lighting: Mandatory (white front, red rear)
  • Reflectors: Yellow on sides, red rear

Wild camping is strictly prohibited in the Netherlands. Use:

  • Natuurkampeerterreinen (Natural campsites)
  • Campspace (camping in private gardens)
  • Vrienden op de Fiets

Rules in Germany

Germany enforces strict vehicle safety rules (StVZO).

  • Width: 1.00 meter is strongly recommended.
  • Lighting: Must be StVZO-approved. No flashing lights allowed.
  • Reflectors: White front reflectors are required for trailers wider than 60cm.

Where can you stay?

Wild camping is prohibited and can result in high fines. Use apps like Park4Night or Stellplatz.info to find legal spots.

Rules in France

France is very bicycle-friendly but has specific safety requirements.

  • Safety Vest: Mandatory for cyclists outside urban areas at night or in poor visibility.
  • Bell: Mandatory, must be audible up to 50 meters.
  • Lighting: Pedal and wheel reflectors are standard requirements.

Where can you stay?

Bivouacking: In many natural areas, it's allowed to set up your tent or caravan for one night (between sunset and sunrise). Check local signs.

Rules in Great Britain

Rules in the UK are less specific about dimensions but strict on visibility.

  • Lights: Must be mounted on the bike/trailer, no higher than 150cm from the ground.
  • Pedal Reflectors: Mandatory (amber), even during the day when the sun is down.

Where can you stay?

In Scotland, wild camping is legal under 'Right to Access' legislation, as long as you respect nature. In England and Wales, you always need landowner permission.

Belgium largely follows European guidelines with some local nuances.

  • Width: Maximum 1.00 meter for the trailer.
  • Rear Reflectors: Two red reflectors (non-triangular) are mandatory.
  • Bell: Mandatory on every bicycle.

Where can you stay?

Wild camping is prohibited. Make use of the many Bivouac zones (campsite poles) specially designed for cyclists and hikers in nature.
